Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR drachm (17mm, 3.90 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5, Fine Style. Miletos mint. Early posthumous issue under Demetrius I Poliorcetes (306-283 BC), struck circa 295/4 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field, labrys below throne. Price-2148 corr. (monogram); Newell-49; ADM I Series XIII. Ex. CNG 99, Lot 86. Well-centered.
Rex says, "A lovely example with near-perfect centering and struck in exceptionally fine style, the reverse detail especially stark, each abdominal muscle, each bead, each ripple of cloth apparent in admirably sharp detail — though the obverse portrait is certainly no less impressive. Clearly the work of a master engraver, and on the cusp of mint state to boot, with full luster retained over deeply toned surfaces and an attractive satiny sheen pervading the fields."
