Switzerland. 1972 gold Medal by Hans Erni. "Mother and Child". 35.67gm.
From a mintage of only 550 pieces. Light hairlines on the reverse indicate a prior cleaning, but nonetheless quite attractive overall. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, it weighs in at 1.0321 oz AGW.
Rex says, "A piece by one of my favorite medallists, Hans Erni, struck to commemorate the 50th Congress of the Swiss Abroad in Bern. Erni drew many of his designs from Ancient Greek mythology, and the depiction here of the birth of a child from the eye of his mother is reminiscent of the birth of Athena from the head of Zeus."
