France. Jean II "le Bon". (1350-1364 AD) Mouton d'Or, PCGS AU53. Emission from January 17th, 1355. Gold. 4.51gm. Friedberg-280; Duplessy-291; Ciani-354.
The obverse of this piece displays the Lamb of God standing left, head turned to the right, long cross with banner behind, all within tressure broken by "IOh' | RЄX" below; around is the text "+ΛGn • DЄI • TOLL • PCCA • mVNDI • mISЄRЄRЄ • nOB". On the reverse is a cross fleury with lis in angles, within quatrefoil with lis in spandrels, and the text "XP'C ‡ VIИCIT ‡ XP'C ‡ RЄGИAT ‡ XP'C ‡ IMPЄRAT" around.
Rex says, "This type is quite popular among collectors for its size (approximately 30mm in diameter) and for its depiction of the Lamb of God on the obverse, with an example in NGC AU55 recently selling for $3,600 including Buyer's Premium in a July 2019 Heritage auction. This piece is quite weakly struck, and as such allows for an opportunity to obtain a problem-free example of the type without breaking the bank. However, despite the weak strike it retains significant eye appeal, with reddish toning pervading the inner areas of the devices and an attractively round flan that is unmarred by rim filing or other damage common for the type. The weakness of the strike is evident only in the central areas, while the legends are full and sharp on either side, revealing the piece's true condition. In fact, there does not appear to be much, if any, wear on the surfaces, and I would not be surprised if this were to have graded higher if not for the weak strike."
