Roman Republic. Manius Aquillius. (Circa 71 or 65 BC) Denarius Serratus.

NGC AU Strike 5/5, Surface 4/5. Rome Mint. Silver. 3.81gm. Sear-336; Crawford-401/1; Sydenham-798.

The obverse of this interesting type displays the draped and helmeted bust of Virtus facing right, with the text "VIRTVS III VIR" around. On the reverse, the figure of the consul Manius Aquillius holds a shield in left hand and lifts up the fallen figure of Sicily with right, an allusion to his victory in the Second Servile War; around is the inscribed "MN•AQVIL MN•F•MN•N", with "SICIL" in the exergue.

Rex says, "An attractively designed type, with a solid and well-struck helmeted bust on the obverse. Pleasant antique toning covers the surface of this example, lending it an air of wholesomeness."

NGC Certification Number: 3990779-008
